Munich, SAEDNEWS: Scholz made the remarks while addressing participants in the 58th Munich Security Conference on Saturday, praising performance of the European Union when it comes to diplomacy.
The German chancellor said that the Vienna talks is an example of Europe's foreign policy efforts.
However, he said that the talks in Vienna, Austria, to revive the 2015 nuclear deal and lift anti-Iran sanctions can end up in a failure if negotiators do not reach an agreement very soon.
The German chancellor, however, said that Iran's uranium enrichment and suspension of supervision by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is unacceptable.
The Islamic Republic has time and again emphasized that Iranians want nuclear program for peaceful purposes. Moreover, Iran' Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has banned acquiring nuclear bombs.
The IAEA as the nuclear watchdog of the United Nations has declared in several occasions that the agency's inspectors have not found any sort of diversion in Iran's nuclear program. Even the United States' spy agencies acknowledged that they did not find any diversion in Iran's nuclear activities towards nuclear weapons.
In a goodwill gesture, Tehran participated in long-time negotiations with world powers, which bore fruit in 2015, and they signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
So, the Islamic Republic of Iran accepted to restrict its nuclear activities in return for removal of anti-Iran sanctions, but the Trump administration withdrew from the nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on Iran in May 2018.
However, Tehran continued to abide by its commitments under the deal for one year, while the Westerners, especially the Europeans, did nothing tangible to keep up their end of bargain.
Then, Iran started scaling back from its commitments under the JCPAO one year after the US's withdrawal.
Now, the US and Europe, who were disloyal in implementing the nuclear accord, are trying to play blame game and portray Iran as the party that should be accountable for the situation regarding the JCPOA.
Despite the fact that the West did not comply with its commitments under the nuclear agreement, the Islamic Republic has shown an active presence in eight rounds of the Joint Commission meetings of the JCPOA in Vienna.
Iran has proposed draft texts to pave the way for reaching a consensus in the Vienna talks. Now, the ball is in the West's court to decide on the future of the nuclear deal.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Scholz referred to the current situation in Ukraine borders with Russia, expressing hope that diplomacy has not ended up in failure regarding this crisis, and that continuation of talks would be important for resolving the problem (Source: IRNA).
