Tehran, SAEDNEWS: Alireza Zakani was appointed as the new mayor of Tehran, winning 18 out of 21 votes from 6th Tehran’s Islamic City Council.
Zakani replaces Pirouz Hanachi, who had assumed the post in November 2018.
The 6th City Council election was held simultaneously with the presidential election on June 18, 2021.
Zakani, 55, has been serving as a member of the Iranian Parliament representing the city of Qom since early 2020. He has also led the Iranian Parliament’s Research Center for nearly a year.
A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, Zakani was one of the six candidates running for Iranian Presidential Elections in June but withdrew from the race just a day before the final vote to help Ebrahim Raisi (Source: IRNA).
