Tehran, SAEDNEWS: A dark cloud of mistrust has affected Iran-Saudi Arabia relations, but both countries are aware of international changes and know that Riyadh and Tehran should repair the ties based on common interests in order to maintain regional security.
Following execution of Ayatollah Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr in January 2016, the relationship between the two countries deteriorated, and other issues such as Saudi war on Yemen as well as Saudis' opposition to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, added up to the flame of differences.
Optimism
Authorities in Riyadh and Tehran are optimistic that the talks to find ways out of the differences are friendly and constructive.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said in an interview with the Financial Times that the talks with Iran was "cordial" and "exploratory."
“We are serious about the talks,” the Saudi minister said, adding “For us it’s not that big a shift. We’ve always said we want to find a way to stabilize the region.”
Iran has reiterated that the Islamic Republic is optimistic about the mutual negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said in Beirut on October 8 that the Saudi-Iranian talks are on the right track and more negotiations are needed.
Pointing to the roles of both countries in the region, the Iranian FM mentioned that Saudi Arabia and Iran are two important states in the West Asia region, which can play a key role in assuring sustainable security and development in the region.
The Saudi foreign minister emphasized that his country is ready to help find a way to stabilize the region, adding that Iran and Saudi Arabia as two nations can cooperate to create stability and security in West Asia.
Many observers believe that officials in Riyadh have reached the consensus that it is necessary to repair ties with Iran. In a UN General Assembly speech, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud expressed hope that talks with Iran would bear fruit.
