Iran Raps Russia's Stance over Trio Persian Gulf Islands
SAEDNEWS: Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian criticized his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov's stance on three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf, stressing that his country will never compromise on its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
SAEDNEWS: During a telephone conversation with Lavrov on Friday, Amir Abdollahian dismissed a joint statement of the 6th Arab-Russia Cooperation Forum held in Morocco over the islands of Abu Musa, the Greater and Lesser Tunb, and once again reiterated that the islands in the Persian Gulf are an “inseparable” part of the Iranian’s soil.

The Iranian minister stated Tehran and Moscow enjoy expanding relations and “respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are among the fundamental principles in relations between countries”.

The remarks came days after the sixth Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum concluded with a communique reiterating the UAE’s claim over the islands. Iran has repeatedly declared that its ownership of the three islands is unquestionable, and on numerous occasions stoutly rejected claims leveled by the Persian Gulf countries to the islands.

International documents clearly show that the three islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa which were historically owned by Iran, temporarily fell to British control in 1903. The islands were returned to Tehran based on an agreement in 1971 before the UAE was born.

Under international law, no state can defy any agreement, which came into being before its establishment.

During the phone call, Lavrov said Russia always respects Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, emphasizing that such a policy should never be questioned.

He added Moscow has strategic relations with Tehran (SOURCE: FARSNEWS).
