Parviz Kordavani, Father of Desert Studies in Iran Dies at 90
Parviz Kordavani was one of the outstanding professors in desert studies, who could play key role in advancing the field and drought management.

Tehran, SAEDNEWS: The eminent expert of climate change called for more actions on preserving the environment and conducted various researches on the need to conserve deserts.
He was born in a rich family in Garmsar, Semnan province, in 1931. He has been interested in working and preserving desert areas since his childhood.
After attaining a diploma in Tehran, he travelled to Germany to study civil engineering, where he could get a PHD in 1966. Then he returned to Iran and started working with Urmia Agriculture University and after a few years he joined University of Tehran. Thanks to his unique works, he turned into the prominent professor of the university and won the Mehregan Award for writing the best book of the year. He married Farideh Golboo, an author, and they had two children.
The professor, known as the 'Father' of desert studies, founded a center for studying desert areas in Iran. He was also a member of the Middle East Water Networks of the Asia Studies Foundation as well as several other Iranian and international institutions.
Kordavani wrote more than 20 academic books and tens of scientific articles in Persian, English and German languages. In 2005, Professor Kordavani was honored to be among the ever-lasting names for his studies in geography.
The academic believed that the nature of Iran is very rich especially because of its clean energies; so, its deserts should be preserved as a great advantage for the country.
The professor also stressed the need to train people to use water in an appropriate way so that to save it for a longer time.
Professor Kordavani passed away on August 18, 2021. His statue was constructed in Garmsar, his birthplace, and there is a park named after Professor Parviz Kordavani in Garmsar Road to express gratitude to his valuable efforts in desert studies in Iran (Source: IRNA).
