Tabriz is a nominee to be designated as a creative city at the City of Literature Program of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), says the mayor of Tabriz.

Tabriz, SAEDNEWS: Iraj Shahin Baher said on Friday that Tabriz in East Azarbaijan province is the cradle of outstanding art and literature schools of thoughts and that the city has been a haven for scientists, poets and literary scholars, including Saeb, Shams, Mohammad Fozuli, Mohammad Hossein Shahriar, Parvin Etesami and Homam for 1,000 years.

Tabriz enjoys precious and vast capacity for global exchanges and especially to gain the title of creative city of literature in UNESCO's City of Literature Program, which is part of the wider Creative Cities Network. The Network was launched in 2004, and now has member cities in seven creative fields. The other creative fields consist of crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, media arts, and music.

The Cultural Commission and Islamic Council of Tabriz ratified a plan to join the city to the Creative Cities Network, he said, adding that UNESCO’s experts visited Tabriz municipality and paved the ground for designating of the city to the organization’s list of creative cities of literature.

The mayor also expressed hope that finalizing the designation by UNESCO will bring good results for the city in particular in cultural, touristic and economic fields (SOURCE: IRNA).
