Verification of US Sanctions’ Removal Needs Months: Iran’s Parliament
It would take at least three months to verify whether the US sanctions on Iran have been practically lifted in case Washington intends to rejoin the JCPOA, the Iranian Parliament’s Research Center said.

Tehran, SAEDNEWS: In an extensive report about the criteria for verifying the practical removal of the US sanctions on Iran, the Parliament’s Research Center said the verification process would not be possible within hours or days.

The real verification of lifting of the sanctions and fulfillment of the verifiable criteria put forward by Iran requires a period of at least 3 to 6 months, the report said.

“Moreover, it would be necessary to verify that Iran’s economy will continue to benefit from the removal of the sanctions in certain time spans, for example every six months,” the research center said.

The report has also enumerated the main indices that must be satisfied as part of any formal process for the termination of the US sanctions, including the “normalization of full banking relations, complete removal of the obstacles to exports, full sale of Iranian oil and oil products, and the complete and swift repatriation of currency generated by the sales.”

As the JCPOA Joint Commission convened its latest meeting in Vienna earlier this week, Iran maintains that the termination of the US sanctions in a verifiable manner is the only choice for Washington to rejoin the deal.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the Group 5+1 and endorsed by the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

However, then-US president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled Washington out of the nuclear deal in May 2018 and reinstated the anti-Iranian sanctions that had been lifted by the deal.

As the remaining European parties have failed to fulfill their commitments to the accord and compensate for Washington’s absence, Iran moved in May 2019 to scale back its JCPOA commitments (Source: Tasnim).
